Since I was a kid and rode in my friends new 1965 GTO Convertible, I
always dreamed of owning one. Finally, in 1990 I found one here
locally with enormous potential. Although it was painted black and
needed some minor body work, it was an original 44,000 mile survivor.
Originally sold in Ann Arbor, Michigan it spent a number of years in
someone's garage in Ohio. The person I bought it from brought it
back to Michigan and then I became the fourth owner. It came with
the Protect-O-Plate, original dealer packet, and number matching
drive train. During the winter of '91 to '92, I rebuilt the original
WS tri power motor, boring it out to .030 over with new internals
including a Crane .488 lift cam. Original heads were ported, assembled
with all new components from PY and Crane, and treated to a 3 angle
valve job. Tri power was completely redone by legendary Pontiac master,
Milt Schornack. I had the transmission rebuilt and installed a new
set of 3:55 gears with an Auburn Posi in the rear. In 1994, my friends
at A-1 Collision completely stripped the body, perfomed any sheetmetal
repair, and treated my GTO to a Basecoat/Clearcoat finish in the
original Mayfair Maize exterior color. Interior was cleaned up and
I had to only replace the carpet, door sills, and armrests. Seats,
glass, and even the convertible top is original to the vehicle. I
only show this vehicle at our local Woodward GTO events, since I rather
be enjoying the GTO the way it was meant to used-DRIVEN!
